Luke 4:4 (ESV)
And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone.'"
Talk About It
Jesus had been in the desert for 40 days without eating any food. He was very, very hungry! The devil came to Jesus and said, "If you're really God's Son, turn these stones into bread." But Jesus said no. He quoted a verse from the Bible that says people need more than just food to really live.
Just like Jesus, we need food for our bodies every day. But did you know our hearts need food too? Our hearts need God's love, His Word, and time with Him. When we're sad, lonely, or upset, we can't fix those feelings by just eating snacks or buying new toys. Our hearts need God! Jesus knew this truth, and that's why He could say no to the devil's trick. God wants to feed our hearts every single day through prayer, reading the Bible, and spending time with our family talking about Him.
For Parents to Explain
Dear God, thank You for giving us food for our bodies and for our hearts. Help us remember that we need You every day, not just the things we can see and touch.
Family Activities
Heart Food vs. Body Food
- Draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper. Label one side "Body Food" and the other "Heart Food."
- Cut out pictures from magazines or draw things that feed our bodies (fruits, vegetables, bread, etc.).
- On the other side, draw or write things that feed our hearts (prayer, Bible stories, hugs, helping others).
- Talk about how we need both kinds of food every day to be healthy and happy.
Daily Heart Feeding Chart
- Make a chart with the days of the week across the top.
- Each day, draw a small heart when you do something to "feed your heart" with God (pray, read a Bible story, sing worship songs, help someone).
- At the end of each day, talk about how feeding your heart with God made you feel.
- At the end of the week, celebrate all the ways your family grew closer to God together.
Family Prayer
Now let's each tell God one way we want to 'feed our hearts' with Him this week.
